TRADE INFORMATION
Reds receive: 2B/OF Lux Gavin
Dodgers get: Competitive Balance Round A pick and outfield prospect Mike Sirota
Lux, 27, who has two more seasons left under club control, batted.251/.320/.383 with 2.1 WAR, 10 home runs and 50 RBIs over 139 games for Los Angeles last season. A left-handed hitter who throws right-handed, he primarily played second base in 2024 but has also logged time at shortstop, left field and center field since debuting in 2019.
According to Nick Krall, head of baseball operations for the Reds, “He’s a guy with really good upside.” “He still has room to run to get better, even with where he is right now.”
Lux missed the entire 2023 season due to an ACL tear in his right knee, which may have also played a role in his sluggish start in 2024. As he batted in the second half, his performance much improved.304 with seven home runs in his last 61 games and an OPS of.899.
With 71 playoff at-bats throughout his tenure with Los Angeles, Lux contributes postseason experience. He batted as the Dodgers advanced to the 2024 World Series. His eighth-inning sacrifice fly in Game 5 of the World Series knotted the score before Mookie Betts drove in the game-winning run, although he was 177 (6-for-34) with one homer.
Reds trade for versatile Dodgers infielder Gavin Lux
The Dodgers have too many infielders when Hyeseong Kim was added last week, Tommy Edman signed an extension, and Betts is anticipated to return to the infield next season.
A few weeks ago, we had a conversation about it. We were aware of his availability,” Krall remarked. “We were aware that they were attempting to acquire someone else. We discussed it among ourselves. We followed them around. It most likely happened in the last several days, primarily when they signed [Kim].
The Reds acquired right-handed pitcher Owen White from the Rangers for cash considerations, making the Lux move their second trade of the day. Roansy Contreras, a right-handed reliever, was sent to clear space on the 40-man roster.
Colorado native Matusz chose to play baseball at the University of San Diego after being selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the fourth round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft. Then, in the 2008 MLB Draft, Baltimore selected him fourth overall. Matusz spent seven seasons in the Orioles’ bullpen after making his Major League debut in August 2009.
